Get Your Dogs Nails Trimmed and A Chance To Win 3 Spa Days At The Petropolitan !

This Is An Important Message From Your Dog....

“Woof, Woof” (oh, sorry)  Hey - take a look at this, it is really cool — almost as cool as that half eaten dog cookie I found under the couch this morning.

Buy a $20 raffle ticket and your dog gets a nail trim and you get a chance to win 3 Spa Days at The Petropolitan. A Spa day includes  playtime, bath, nails trimmed and filed, ears cleaned, bubble bath paw treatment, facial, teeth brushed, haircut or Furminator de-shedding treatment, bandana or bow and a special treat....the works!

Take me to The Petropolitan for my nail trim (oh can we check out all of the really great treats—we just have to look and take a sniff, you don’t have to buy me anything, just look at my sad eyes and just say no if you can). You can buy your ticket there

 The Petropolitan

408 S. Harwood St, Dallas, TX  214-741-4100

OR make a $20 donation at Jean's 3 Day Donation Page and you will be automaticly entered - just stop by for your nail trim when it is conventent (this can also be counted as a chartable donation on your taxes!) http://08.the3day.org/goto/jean.kelly

Ok here is the scoop on the raffle thing….120 tickets will be sold and the winning ticket will be drawn on October 18, 2008, At The Doggy Halloween Party at The Petropolitan.  If the response is greater than 120 entries, a second drawing will occure with the remainder of the entries.  The proceeds go to the Breast Cancer 3 Day (the net proceeds go to Susan G. Komen for the Cure and to the National Philanthropic Trust Breast Cancer Fund - 85% of each dollar goes to education, research, mamograms and treatment to those in need). One winner will be drawn for the 3 Spa Days Package (unless a second drawing occurs). The nail trim or the winning prize(s) can be given as a gift to another person. The 3 Spa Day Package must be used within one year from date of drawing.  Spa services will be provided by Pet Stylist Jean Kelly.  Dogs must be current on vaccinations for service.

Now go to the treat jar and give me a cookie (I really, really want one).

Everyone who donates can have their name on Jean Kelly's pink backpack - this way you will be there with me for the entire 60 miles.

Big Thanks To Everyone Who Came To Lee Harveys On Sunday For The Fund Raiser!

Early Detection Can Save Your Life!

Breast Cancer is a disease that not only affects women and men, but also dogs.  Please spay your female dogs at an early age, it is one of the best ways to prevent this disease.

What Is The Breast Cancer 3Day?

The 3Day is a 60 mile, 3 day walk that raises money and awareness for the fight against breast cancer.

Each walker is required to raise $2200. The average walker raises $3000.
If you multiply $3,000 times 3,000 walkers, times 14 cities....and it happens each year. This is year #6

All I can say is:
Wow! Look at how many lives  saved...including mine.

When a community sees 2,500 to 3,000 people walking as a group, they realize how many people have been affected by this nasty, nasty disease.

Every advancement in breast cancer research, treatment, education and prevention in the last 25 years has been touched by a Komen for the Cure grant.

Jean's Training Update:  I have already walked my first 20 mile walk! (I did it in 7 hours!)  I walk about 25 miles each week. I will be increasing the millage as it gets closer to the 3Day and when the weather is cooler.

It is 5 weeks till the 3Day.  I will be ready and I plan to walk every step of the 60 miles - no "sweep van" for me.  I have the determination of a young terrier with her favorite toy stuck under the couch!  But I can only walk if I raise the $2200 in donations.  I can only walk if you help.  I am going to have the names of everyone who donates on my backpack on pink ribons- so if you donate - you will be walking the 60 miles with me.

  Breast Cancer
& Dogs

The risk of breast cancer is almost eliminated in dogs that  are spayed before their first heat.

Which Dogs Are At Risk?Mammary tumors are the most common tumors in female dogs who have not been spayed.  Mammary tumors are more common in unsprayed, middle-aged female dogs usually between 5 and 10 years of age, but can occur as young as 2.

Symptoms Mammary tumors present as a solid mass or as multiple swellings.  When tumors do arise in the mammary tissue, they are usually easy to detect by gently palpating the mammary glands.  When tumors first appear they will feel like small pieces of pea gravel just under the skin.  They are very hard and are difficult to move around under the skin.  They can grow rapidly in a short period of time doubling their size every month or so.

How Dose It Spread? Dogs normally have five sets of mammary glands, each with its own nipple  Although breast cancer can and does occur in all of the glands, it usually occurs most frequently in the 4th  and 5th pair.  In half of the cases more than one growth is observed.  Benign growths are often smooth, small and slow growing.  Sighs of malignant tumors include rapid growth, irregular shape, firm attachment to the skin or underlying tissue,  bleeding, and ulceration,  Occasionally tumors that have been small for a long period of time may suddenly grow quickly and aggressively but this is exception not the rule.

Mammary cancer spreads to the rest of the body through the release of individual cancer cells from the various tumors into the lymph nodes. New tumors form in the lymph nodes and then release more cells that go to other organs such as the lungs, liver or kidneys.

Treatment Surgical Removal:  If a surgery is done early in the course of this disease, the cancer can be totally eliminated in over 50% of the cases having a malignant form of cancer.

Chemotherapy and Radiation Therapy:  Chemotherapy has not been a very successful nor widely used treatment for mammary tumors in dogs.  However, with the constantly changing and improving drugs available, a veterinary oncologist should be consulted to find out if there is an effective drug available for your dogs particular type of mammary cancer.  The effectiveness of radiation therapy has not been thoroughly researched.  Some anti-hormonal drug regimens are being tested in dogs.  At this point in time, surgical removal of the tumors is the treatment recommended by many veterinarians.
